Project Overview
Billfold is a FinTech platform providing financial management and billing solutions through a sophisticated intranet application. As a Senior Software Engineer, I delivered intricate backend solutions, led database optimisation efforts, and drove the team toward consistently high-quality code.
The Problem
The existing codebase suffered from slow, unoptimised database queries that caused performance bottlenecks in critical billing workflows. The team also needed stronger technical leadership for introducing new features without regressions, and better processes for code quality and mentorship.

Key Challenges & Solutions
Taming Slow PostgreSQL Queries
Several billing reports ran multi-second queries against millions of rows. I profiled them using EXPLAIN ANALYZE, added targeted indexes, and migrated the heavy logic into optimised stored functions — achieving sub-100ms response times.
Feature Parity Without Breakage
FinTech applications have strict requirements around data integrity. I introduced feature flags and database migrations with careful rollback plans to release incrementally with zero downtime.
Cross-Team Alignment
Bridging communication between QA, PMs, and clients required me to translate technical constraints into business language, ensuring realistic timelines and clear scope.
